Etymology: New Latin, from nymphae inner lips of the vulva (from Latin, plural of nympha) + Late Latin mania mania
The label of nymphomania is used in a pejorative and derogatory manner in reference to a woman whose sex drive or sexual activity is subjectively deemed too high. In psychiatry the term is loosely applied to females believed to have an insatiable sexual appetite. But the clinical conditions that include the concept of high levels of sexual desire and/or activity do have their own terms: hypersexuality and sexual addiction or compulsivity. It is the double standard which exists in our society that renders nymphomania into a dreaded disease. Glory to Donna Joanne !
